Diabetes Awareness Series

Did you know that Type 2 diabetes is now considered a global pandemic with 10% of the world’s adult population living with diabetes? In Australia alone, 1.3 million adults had type 2 diabetes in 2021, causing 10% of all deaths!

South Pacific nations have the highest prevalence of diabetes in the world, where every 20 minutes an amputation occurs due to diabetes or an associated lifestyle disease. As a result of this, the United Nations reports that diabetes and other non-communicable diseases are one of the greatest threats to the region’s development, and this is the focus of The 10,000 Toes Campaign.

Type 2 diabetes is seen as a chronic irreversible illness, requiring lots of medications to slow its progression. However, recent research has shown that type 2 diabetes can be prevented, halted, or in some cases, even reversed with healthy lifestyle habits! The first step is education and awareness, so people can make good health decisions to reduce their risk of illness. Everyone deserves to live a long healthy and happy life.

Dr. Kuma is one of the founding members of The 10,000 Toes Campaign and heads up Impact Strategies, which is rolling out The 10,000 Toes Campaign in the Solomon Islands, as our Regional Ambassador. He is passionate about helping others and this is evident in the work he is doing with us. Find out more about Dr. Kuma here.

In this important series, you will learn more about diabetes, the serious effects it causes, and also ways to prevent it from affecting you, your family, and your friends. We are on a mission to stamp out diabetes in the South Pacific and spread awareness all over the world.
