From Despair to Hope: A Life-Saving Journey in Fiji
Young Sofi Azim had just arrived at Nadi Airport from New Zealand and rushed to the taxi rank to catch a cab to Suva City—a journey of about three hours. During the drive, the taxi driver asked Sofi what had brought him back to Fiji this time. Looking anxious and worried, Sofi shared that this trip was different; he was coming to see his parents, whose diabetic conditions had deteriorated and who were scheduled for amputations later that week.
The taxi driver mentioned the alarming increase in diabetes and amputations in Fiji, noting that he had even transported people from other island nations specifically for amputation procedures. Then, according to Sofi, the taxi driver asked if he had heard of The 10,000 Toes Campaign. He explained that the campaign has a strong network of trained professionals who care for diabetics and that even doctors from hospitals refer patients to the nearest 10,000 Toes Wellness Hubs for alternative treatments and care.
Without wasting any time, Sofi searched for The 10,000 Toes Campaign on his phone. By the time he reached his home in Suva, he had contacted them, and an appointment was set for the following day.
The next morning, a 10,000 Toes Ambassador visited Sofi’s parents. After assessing their wounds, he determined there was still hope, and the 10,000 Toes service was quickly implemented according to established procedures, treatment protocols, and strategies.
Two Ambassadors from a nearby Wellness Hub were assigned to visit, educate, and monitor blood sugar and blood pressure daily for the first two weeks. Thanks to a new meal plan, both Sofi’s parents experienced gradual drops in blood sugar within just seven days. By the end of April, as their blood sugar levels decreased, the wounds began to dry up, showing significant signs of healing. The pain subsided.
The amputation, initially scheduled for the end of March, was no longer necessary. Sofi was able to return to New Zealand, confident that his parents’ limbs and lives had been saved.
Now in June, the Ambassadors continue to visit once a week, and both parents are living healthier lives than they did three months ago.
This story is one of many inspiring accounts from our dedicated Ambassadors in the field, working tirelessly to promote health and well-being. We are continually reminded of the transformative power of proper nutrition, regular exercise, wound care, daily sunshine, and prayer. There is always hope—never give up, never give in.
